I'm not a housewife, but I am a woman. 20+ years of video games in general, starting with breakout on atari and adventure on the ibm pc (1983). 6 years of eq1; 6 months each of daoc, wow, coh, eq2. Civ 3 and Civ 4. Every Zork game known to man; Bard's Tale; Wizardry etc. Gal Civ 2. Diablo. Dungeon Siege. Morrowind. Various Rogue like games (starting with rogue itself). Also computer based solitaire, mahjongg, sudoka, and match 3 games. I'd say I play a similar range to most men, with the exception that I don't enjoy FPS or war games -- and that's because I don't do twitch games well.

Hmm, they are pretty good at hiding then because it sure looks as if male are still dominating that area like 80/20. I always knew that tons of housewives were playing MMORPGs, but would be interesting to see what they play compared to males and on what platform.

I'm self-employed (freelance website designer) but I'm married and work out of home, so that sort of counts. Currently, I play WoW (60 tauren warrior, PvP) and I'm reading this while I install AutoAssault on the other comp. Also fond of 4X and RTS games. Killing people one at a time is for wimps, I want nukes! On my PS2, retro arcade games (the stuff I grew up playing), GTA3, DDR, Antigrav, and a (male) friend has talked me into trying Xenosaga real soon now. On my GBA SP, pretty much just retro arcade and some board games; that's all my aging eyes can handle on that sqint-o-vision screen.

Most of the people I know in MMORPGs, including the guild that I was with for 2+ years until it fell apart, don't know I've got Slot B instead of Tab A.

"My mother\'e2\'80\'99s a gamer, and so is one of my former mentors from high school. Mom plays casino-style games, while Mrs. Mentor plays Diablo and Dungeon Siege. Diablo takes a bit more focus than video-poker, buuuuut\'e2\'80\'a6 Mom spends more time gaming than Mrs. Mentor, because Mom has more time on her hands."

Just to muck up the delineation even further, my stepmom plays mostly Realarcade games like the millions of Bejeweled clones out there .... BUT, she also plays Puzzle Pirates. Oh no, where will we draw the line now?

Xanthippe says on April 12th, 2006 at 1:17 pm:
....
With regard to Bejewelled - it\'e2\'80\'99s a single player game. Counting people who play single player online games is not accurate.

Umm, say what? It's still a video game. Are you saying that playing Civ 4 doesn't count as playing games because it is a single player game? That 43% of game players are woman statistic isn't just online or multiplayer.....

and I have no problem with counting Bejeweled players in the same category as Counter Strike players either. It is still a video game, and the players often put in as many hours (or more!).

As to the rest: I'm a female player of both MMOs and single player games, and I can assure you that every guild I've been in has had a high percentage of women members. Adult women at that. They just don't necessarily see a need to announce it.

http://crystaltips.typepad.com/wonderland/2006/04/girl_gamers_in_.html

" GirlsofCS is an online gaming community and nude pinup gallery. We are out to empower female gamers by eliminating the negative online stereotypes towards them. Online gaming has typically been dominated by men, but that is changing. By keeping our community mature, we hope to encourage more female gamers to enjoy their games with us.

GirlsofCS members will have access to our private VoIP server, Counter-Strike Source Game Servers, and exclusive content through our website. We plan on providing the no-bull gaming community that gamers have dreamed of since the internet began."

Maybe they need that Second Life "Guaranteed Gender" program or whatever it's called. And yes, no Web site yet, just a Myspace blog.

Why yes, I too would paticipate in this sausage festivale (and logical fallacy) if it meant sucessfully tricking myself into believing that most gyno-gamers are in fact.... secsay goths/emos/punks/retros/ what have you.

Write an article about it? Nay, I wasn't one of those kids who'd get all upset because some girl wanted to join our treehouse club.
