Insanely enough, Phelps is a registered Democrat (or was), contributed to Al Gore’s campaign, and then verbally knifed Gore in the back with a whinging protest about gays.

Phelps isn’t really conservative OR liberal; he’s just nuts.

It’s not that they think the soldiers are gay, or that gays are directly damaging the military.

Their crazy-ass moonbat philosophy is as follows:

1) There are gays in the US.
2) The US allows these gays to exist, ie, does not stone them all as a matter of course.
3) This has angered God, who of course hates gays. (yes, THAT site is run by these people)
4) God is punishing us by killing US soldiers in Iraq and elsewhere.

They are really just a highly refined version of the same stupidity that Jerry Falwell spews on a frequent basis (and then rapidly retracts when people call him on it).

Fred Phelps has done more to damage his own cause than anyone else I can think of. Every time one of his people gets on TV, another few thousand viewers see the most ugly personification of bigotry possible, and public opinion moves a litle bit further away from WBC-types. So, thanks Fred!

I guess for me, I see this as a conflict in freedom of speech. Yeah, these creeps have the right to stand by the road and spew hate, but people have the right to speak over the grave of thier kin in peace, too. On the whole, I don’t think that it matters too much just which piece of road they spew hate on, and one out of earshot of the cemetary would do fine. It is, after all, freedom of speech, not the right to a captive audience.

I really haven’t read too much about these people. Am I correct in my understanding that they think America and the military is going to hell in a handbasket because of the gay people in the population?

That crazy ass bitch kept going on about how her freedom of speech was impeded (however slight). Does she not realize that there would be zero freedom of speech without the contributions and sarifices of America’s soldiers (including the gay ones)?

On the other hand, I’m a big fan of letting people make goddamn fools of themselves in public.

On the other… unprofessional doesn’t cover it. News shows, for all the crap they sling, do nothing for themselves or anyone else when they resort to shouting. Honestly, I felt like they needed to cat-fight it out about two mins in. Didn’t even finish it because it was getting circular and annoying.

But for those of you who think this is unique to Fox News… every single news interview program on every news channel runs essentially the same. You have two people who really aren’t debating a point, they’re shooting for “best sound bite” and that typically means you attack the other person and leave them having to defend themselves the entire time so they can never get a word in edgewise (James Carville is a master and perhaps pioneer of this technique). Makes you look like you won even though you never really discussed the issue. This video is a major case in point. Even if Ms Nutjob had indeed had a leg to stand on she never could have gotten that far because the reporter constantly attacked her. You’ll note she was on the defensive the entire time.
