[...] Really… can I add anything else? I mean, I could ask if he ended up wearing a box on his head or if a blue fox tried to cyber him, but really… nothing I say could top the surrealness of a presidential candidate flying into a graphic MOO chat to, due to technical limitations, talk to about 40 people, some of whom may have been wearing kitty ears.
I'll admit that it has its limitations. Its not exactly a game -- I'd call it something between a game and a tool. And yes, without friends or the interest to search out interesting events (admitted not much unless you are into the sexxors or the gambling or the *ingo -- but there is stuff). There is an fps sim now but its not a 'kill things to get stuff to go up a level to go exploring so you can kill things and get stuff to go up a level...."

If what you are is the standard Bartle Acheiver or Killer, SL is SO not the game for you. But if what rocks your socks is exploring and/or socializing, then you'll have fun in SL.

I played SL for a week, was duly impressed by all the amazing buildings, but they were mostly empty or full of people just talking to each other. There was no game there. As fun as that might be, I'm not in the architecture business, and the 3d modeling system made me sad. Maybe that's just because I spend all day in Solid Edge. If I had found more game to enjoy, I would have been overjoyed that it was there at all. I'm glad that people are having meet and greets and showing off wacky virtual art but I can't really call it a game. If I had a bunch of friends that played it (and I knew some Java or whatever it is you code in on SL) I might have gotten into it. But it didn't grab me right off.

So\'e2\'80\'a6 how does one find the good parts of Second Life? One reason I haven\'e2\'80\'99t given it a shot is that the site doesn\'e2\'80\'99t give me much of an idea where to get started.

You open the Search functionality and find the "Shelter" or "New Citizens Inc", then teleport there. Both are friendly places in SL where newbies are welcomed, where you can get freebies and where they can give you pointers on more places to visit.

As you meet people, ask them for nice places to visit or about shops / clubs / events that interest you and start exploring. since there is no goal in SL, a large part of the fun is in exploring once you have gotten a few pointers.

There's a lot of Second Life that looks appealing, but the "rancid pit of cyber" sounds pretty lame.

Well, okay, that's not entirely true. I'd give a game called Rancid Pit of Cyber Online at least a second look. Just to reward the honesty.
