Update: There Is A Cat Under My Bed

Specifically: this one.
elrond1.jpg

His name is Elrond. The pic is from the humane society where we found him. (Update: the old link’s expired since, you know, we have the cat now. I had posted it to prove that it wasn’t me who named the cat Elrond. I am considering changing his name to L. Ron.) It was either him or a rambunctious kitten, and frankly our house isn’t ready for that much cuteness (nor is our upholstery)

More on this story as it develops. Or not.

(Oh, and we also have a house now. But clearly, the cat is more important.)

Grats! It looks just like you!

    Awww.

We just recently ended up with a third cat ourselves. 3 month old kitten that was found near starvation abandon near some garbage cans. They are a ton of cute at that age. Thankfully easily distracted from upholstery as well by cardboard and kitty trees to climb.

He appears to have a big head. Was he an outdoor cat?

Bonus points if you replace your own picture with the image of your cat.

    Quite a nice looking animal.

awww how cute–and kudos on rescuing a cat from a human society.

  • Lietgardis

Congratulations! Just be sure not to let him near any stools.

My secrets for maintaining a clean indoor cat household: Nutro Natural Choice Indoor Cat Formula food (my cats shit, like, twice a week) and Tidy Cat Multiple Cat scoopable litter.

I can’t find a good picture of it, but my cats’ favorite toy is a fluffy bird on the end of a bungee cord. You hook it to the top of a door frame. When the cats catch it and try to carry it off, the bungee cord snaps back, and they get all pissed off. It makes the cats do cool Matrix and Prince of Persia moves on the walls.

A housemate has a cat, a reasonably big tom called Bear. He’s taken care of the mouse problem quite nicely, but he has problem with kittens.

Yes, kittens. There are two kittens next door. They’re maybe half as long and maybe 10% of his body weight (quite young)..and they beat him up.

Until we got a water spray and sued it every time, they came into our house and ate his food, even.

    Mm Cats. Crazy animals!

    General cat-related advice:

Best cat scratching thingies: those cardboard trays full of corrugated cardboard strips on edge. Apply a bit of catnip (usually included) and the cat will love it and ignore the upholstery.

Backup plan: little kitty claw clippers (available at pet shops) applied weekly.

Most useful command to teach a cat: Go away. Anyone who has ever had a huge pot full of boiling spaghetti in their hands and a cat wrapped around their ankles will understand this.

Other commands every cat should learn: come, freeze, no, drop it. Having a voice-controlled cat saves a great deal of stress.

Teaching a cat to do tricks (jumping through a hoop is always good) is a great way to weird out friends and relatives.

World’s best kitty toy: the little pull strips from around the tops of one-gallon plastic jugs, like spring water bottles. Even my elderly cat will go nuts with those.

Always teach a cat to walk on a leash. This will save you much grief. Besides, it’s always fun to walk into the vet’s office with your cat on a leash beside you and watch the faces of the people with the battle scars on their faces from stuffing a panicked cat into a carrier.

Try the silica kitty litter. You only need to change it about once a month, and it doesn’t smell. Amazing stuff. Target store brand is cheap and the best bang for the buck.

To make sure your cat always comes when called, never call him for anything he wouldn’t want to do, and always praise him and scritch his favorite scritchy spot. Cats have amazingly long memories for things like being callled for a trip to the vet. If it’s something he isn’t going to like, don’t call him, just catch him.

    No, he’s just a game designer’s cat. ;)

Now that’s a link I can really use. I’ll have to pay the Austin Humane Society a visit myself.

    Dear Feline,

    Congratulations on your new Lum.

Dunno about changing the name. I mean, cats and elves have a lot in common.

Pointy ears, weird eyes, a tendency to come and go swiftly and the nasty habit of puking up part digested hair in your shoe…

    (Nice kitty tho)
