Warhammer High Level PVP Gameplay Explained

Kill the dude with the thing.

  • Synral

That’s tier 2 PVP. Not necessarily high level. :(

  • http://www.underealm.com/ Skizo

And don’t forget the thing after you killed the dude.

Cause you killed the dude with the thing, right?

  • hsinclair

Meh, mindlessly rushing the carrier (especially a tank) is a pretty shitty strategy. It means you’re more likely to get overextended, the carrier is just going to get healed, and their dps will feast off the easy kills and rack up so many points that it won’t really matter if you retrieve the relic, they’ll have a comfy lead.

  • Belsameth

You’re quite right, hsinclair. However, more often then not, it really does play out as utterly stupid as Fargo makes out in his comic. Frustrating at best.

  • Amaranthar

I didn’t know that they made such a giant leap to the next generation.

what if the dude with the thing kills you?

  • Viz

So they should follow the strategy that all those WoW players should’ve worked out after 3 years of Warsong Gulch?

  • glasseye

    Hurray for horrible strategy!

  • Trevel

It is quite sad when a rudimentary, basic strategy is still a step up from normal.

Keep on reaching for that thing… that thing I sentcha…

  • dartwick

    lol

The game really should do a better job of explaining the importance of “the thing”. Because a lot of people dont get iit.

  • Suraknar

LOL nice Comic Strip, it represents the challenges of Mourkain Temple.

I would just like to point out that you can win without “the thing”, because every Kill scores you 10 points, and the thing only scores a couple of points per tick or so.

However, it requires a good balanced team, that is working together, no going out there for Solo Glory and kills, because the enemy also makes 10 points per kill, and thus the team that works together the most scores more kills and keeps its own alive can outpace the points generated by “the thing”.

The person who made that Comic strip in one point decided to not even bother healing someone, and that sadly contributed also to the loss.

The Thing is there in reality to turn the tides of the Offender and the Defender. Who ever has the thing usually is on the defensive, and it is up to the team that does not have it to attack.

but you still don’t have to go for the Thing first even if you attack, provided you are killing the enemy and your losing less people than them.

Rushing in for the thing, is a bad idea, the defenders pick you off so fast because, well they defend, and can focus fire on attackers, which results in matches ending 500 to 70.

It is simple really but there is also diverging opinions during the match that really do not help in Teamwork and Cohesion.

Btw, killing someone while holding the thing, yields much more extra points, so the thing holder can simply give the killing blow, and the match is over in 5 minutes.

If you have a very well organized team, you can even play it offensively with the thing. But that only happens in Scenarios when the stars align.

Other than that, nice comic strip, even if it asks the things that would actually make the enemy win faster.

  • Iconic

“That’s tier 2 PVP. Not necessarily high level.”

‘High level’ is sarcastic, and it refers to a high level of strategic sophistication.

  • Sheepherder

Not a player of Warhammer, but Suraknar, one would think your objective is to obtain the thing regardless.

Realistically, the defender has the advantage, true, but if you don’t attack they happen to gain a steady stream of points in addition to being able to dictate the ground they fight on and ability to win through attrition. Simply ganking anyone who’s not defending the thing holder may or may not give you the win depending on how stupid your opponents are.

Presuming rudimentary intelligence and skill on both sides having the thing that gives you points will always deliver into your hands the ability to win through attrition. Picking people off can only offset the point gains to the other side if the other side is stupid enough to not focus their efforts into a single area.

  • Staryx

So basically the strategy to use for this WAR scenario is the same one the idiots I play with love in Eye of the Storm?

  • TurdBlossom

It’s not like the strategy changes at the higher tiers; in Tier 3, the only scenario anyone plays is Tor Anroc, which is yet another “kill the dude with the thing” scenario. It has the fundamental difference of adding “knock the dude with the thing into the lava,” though, just for added diversity.

To the person that said “they don’t do a very good job of explaining ‘the thing’”, the directions for the scenario are on the splash screen as the zone loads. I don’t know what more they could do other than have Max Headroom (or Mark Jacobs) pop up during every match and scream “THAT DUDE HAS THE THING! YOU SHOULD GO GET IT!” It’s not like this game is complicated, but it’s extraordinary how complicated some people make it.

HULK SMASH PUNY MAN! PUNY MAN RUN AWAY! HULK CHASE PUNY MAN! WHY PUNY MAN’S HEALTH KEEP GOING BACK UP?!

    Presuming rudimentary intelligence

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I’m sorry, that’s just hilarious shit in a PUG. :)

Truly though, this isn’t the players fault. Why? Because the point of the Scenario is not to get the thing. The point is to get as much XP and Reknown as possible. To do this, yes, you should win…but if everyone else on your team isn’t working as a team and the other side mostly is, what’s the smart play? Ignore the thing and kill as many people as you can. As a matter of fact, if you do this, you’re already playing as a part of a team in a PUG better than most. So you may win or you may lose, but if you just spend your time killing idiots, you’ll always get more reward than if you tried to work with your team that has no idea what they are doing.

The whole Scenario should be situated around getting the players to work towards the KILLING THE DUDE WITH THE THING. For instance, do you get anymore xp or reknown if you kill the dude with the thing? No. Do you get anything extra for living with the thing as long as possible? No. I’d love it if Mythic spent some time working on the scenarios to train players to play them better with the proper rewards. Instead of waiting until the end of the match, why not reward players right away for completing tasks in the game while it’s going.

Why aren’t their rewards in scenarios, as you’re going, for completing steps? Why not just assault players with pellets of reward when they do the right thing?

Players have a very short term memory problem and since you get a reward either way, win or lose (though one is bigger than the other), people aren’t that motivated to win… Heck, you get fine rewards for just participating…
