Wisely, NCSoft/NCNC used the original 'invasion' code from the Rikti invasion events to run the zombie apocalypse attacks in CoH. So there's plenty of warning, and if you can get into a group, it turns into a zombie mulchfest.

Yeah. CoH wins.

"If you’re not a complete gibbering buffoon the event IS self-explanatory. No special skills or effort are required to get involved or AVOID getting involved. The only part that’s not 100% in-your-face explained is how to get rid of the zombification without dying. But oh, hey, since every zombie speaks the same language a nub could, I dunno, ASK FOR HELP?"

I can't wait to see how the event is going to unfold even further. I really hope for some fun stuff, like quests for zombies, or something cool to do.

On a side note, the disease can be cured by players, but it seems to get harder and harder to cleanse it the more you're infected.

They can't what, Kade? Are you saying a new player is incapable of enjoying the event? By what mechanic or malevolent force is this so?

If you're not a complete gibbering buffoon the event IS self-explanatory. No special skills or effort are required to get involved or AVOID getting involved. The only part that's not 100% in-your-face explained is how to get rid of the zombification without dying. But oh, hey, since every zombie speaks the same language a nub could, I dunno, ASK FOR HELP?

You don't need to understand the lore or what significance it's supposed to have. Beyond "Lich King" I certainly don't know and I can't say that have a reason to care! It's just fun. It's spice. It's exactly what most people say they want in their games.

So far I've died once to the plague. That's all it took for me to learn how not to get turned whilst still completing quests and such. It is NOT difficult.

Those monster invasion events in UO were awesome. Except for the horrendous lag when half the server showed up to fight off the invasion. In general I think server wide events are great because they give the illusion that you're doing something that matters. Even an illusion is better than saving the foozle only to see it being killed 5 minutes later.

"Maybe they were thinking that even new players could enjoy being involved in a once-in-a-game event that will NEVER happen again instead of just bitching about how they can’t do any fun stuff at level 12? Dunno."

Except they can't. Your logic, like that of most WOW players, is pathetic.

When I was on UO we did town attacks as part of an event. We quickly removed the attacks from the four starting cities for the exact reason Sutro describes. Participating in an event is fun as long as a) you understand it and b) your participation doesn't involve just dying over and over again.

That's reasonable, but would it have helped?

By nature the group of people you're talking about wouldn't even know to USE those resources to prepare themselves. I enjoyed not knowing what was going on. I enjoyed having no idea what would happen if I clicked the "zombie corpse explosion" button. I know what it does now!

Also - there are TONS of emotes/chatter from the NPCs. One just has to read it...

Hellfire:

The issue is that for new players, this happened without warning and without context. New players have no idea that this is part of the event lineup, they have no idea about the Argent Healer being able to explode the zombies and providing a safezone... all they know is that they go to where they were usually safe and get oneshotted randomly, they can't sell their stuff and they can't get quests.

How is that fun for them? How is that growing the MMO industry?

Provide a global announcement, a mail, a news blip on login, SOMETHING. It didn't bother me, but watching my friend's bewilderment really made me think about how ill-timed this is with the marketing push.
