@Toastrider

To be fair, many of us flinch when that word is mentioned solely because many people insist on pronouncing it /NU-cyu-ler/.

I was really sorry to see these layoffs. I alpha-tested Guild Wars, and I had a lot of respect for the NCSoft Europe CR team, who were extremely active in the forums. Their coverage of NCSoft's presence at Leipzig was excellent. They were very accessible and very in touch with the community they were serving.

They're not involved in creating games, so their loss won't affect "development" per se, but it's really tough to see such hard-working people lose their jobs--especially in the current economic climate.

"This seems like another administration that, same as the old, is trying to scare me (the puvlic) into rah-rah-ing along with all their proposals because things are so horrid that if action is not taken !now! (don’t think!), I’m (we’re all) fucked."

Yea bro, it's all made up, like terror alert levels. All the people losing their jobs are an effort to scare you into creating jobs.

<a href="#comment-20965" rel="nofollow">@insanity </a>
While I do like seeing all the data, the types of jobs that were the staple of the economy back in 1948, 1953, 1958... even up to 1981.... are very different than we see today. The farther back you go, the less relevant a comparison is. The speaker's chart compared only the last two recessions for that reason.

Although you balked that the "deceptive" chart didn't show something more illuminating, like percentages, the percentage chart you linked to shows very much the same general pattern between the last three recessions when viewed. It seems odd that this chart would satisfy you as more truthful, since if anything it shows that the original Speaker's chart was rather representative of the situation.

Back to the original topic: My thoughts go out to the NC crewmembers affected. You guys have done great work and deserve better.

So what is this purported exothermic chemical reaction that allows you to extract energy from water?
</blockquote>
Probably the same one that allows for perpetual motion machines (both types).

It's the same reason hydrogen cells aren't taking off. Right now, the only way we can get hydrogen easily is from water; the only way to break the bonds is with electrolysis, which -- durr -- costs energy.

Actually, we do have an excellent way to shore up our power needs. A shame too many people flinch when you mention 'nuclear'.

@insanity

Neither the raw numbers nor the numbers as a % of peak employment are more intellectually honest than the other. Nor 'honest' in any other sense. I'd say any 'honest' assessment of current economic circumstances is that they are dire. Stick your head as deeply into the sand as you want.

Good luck to all of those affected. There's never a good time to be jobless, but now is worse than most.

However, unlike Mythic it seems that NCSoft did allow those laid off to transfer across the pond...according to Massively.
