My problem with this RealID jazz in or out of the game, is that as a female player, I've been on the receiving end of some very nasty (and I do mean nasty with un-solicited explicit pictures) sexual harassment, when a ex-guildmate discovered my then "real" email address.
Blizzard my have "opt-ed out" on the forums RealID bad idea, but there is still the issue of in game RealID AND the friends-of-friends thing.
I've already implemented the child-proof option and I do hope this takes care of the privacy problem.

It does sort of put the final nail in the coffin for the RP in MMORPG, doesn't it? Not that it's been seeing much use these days anyway.

I won't be using any Blizzard products anymore, either. Not because my real name is particularly important (I'm using it here just for the heck of it), but because it's MY goddamn choice to reveal my name or not and Blizzard can stuff it if they think I'll let them take that choice away.

The problem (well, one of many) is that fundamental to Facebook and things like RealID is the premise that "the idea you should should choose to present something other than you is fundamentally flawed". Isn't that the whole idea behind World of Warcraft? You're choosing to create a fantastical version of yourself (or not of yourself at all) and present it to Azeroth and the broader WoW community. I am not three feet tall nor do I have pink pigtails, and I don't shoot arcane magic out of my hands. But that is how I present myself in WoW and how I wish to continue presenting myself to the vast majority of the world in relation to the game. When you take the rule that 'you must be you' and try to apply it to a community that for the most part is pretending not to be themselves, you're going to have friction.

I put this in the previous thread accidentally:

<a href="http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/zeroday/2010/07/07/is-korean-law-driving-policy-at-blizzard/" rel="nofollow">http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/zeroday/2010/07/07/is-korean-law-driving-policy-at-blizzard/</a>

It appears that Blizzard is required by law to use something like RealID in South Korea, which probably explains why they're rolling it out for SC2 first. If battle.net is really one big giant integrated system, they may have an issue being able to apply separate rules to the South Koreans without giving them a way around it by using a US account, which would then be illegal under South Korean law?
If I'm guessing right they chose "apply it to everyone" instead of "rebuild our back end entirely so South Korea is a separate system entirely". Who knows really, but I thought it was interesting.

This announcement promted me to cancel my account for good.

I value my anonymity, at least to some degree. I don't -want- to be -me- when playing games or talking about them. And that's without ever trolling/harrassing someone purposely.

I went into my own account and turned on parental controls for my child self so that Real ID is off in-game. Stupid money-grubbing corporations. Thrakin hit their motivation on the head in the first comment.

Just the other day, I was signing up as a developer for a certain other company, and I was required to choose an alias to use for their developer's forum to protect my privacy. It's amazing the contrast between that and RealID.
I guess it's now officially at the point where you could have more privacy at work than at home. :(

Actually, the comparison isn't even fair to Zuckerberg. Facebook, at least, is a network for people who know each other in real life. What Blizzard is doing is at least as outrageous and contemptible as Facebook making available your paladin's name, race, and spec on your Info page.

Here's more great news. Do you have a WoW account? Well apparently you've already opted into the RealID system by default, because you're a RealID friend of yourself.

Happily, your info is also available to malicious addons!
