MONGO EATS WORLD

I got this mail from, um, Microsoft.

Getting through the most challenging World of Warcraft dungeons, such as Icecrown Citadel and Ulduar, can take hours. Hours that could be spent advancing and finding that next orange drop. WoW players need a secret weapon to help them make more informed decisions when they need them the most maximize XP gains, get the best loot and become a legend of Azeroth. This secret weapon is now available.

Bing.com just launched the Top WoW Items visual search gallery, the unique weapon WoW players can use to find what they need fast and get back to the raid. The Bing visual search gallery reels in data from WoWHead.com’s player-sourced database and organizes it in a visually easy-to-navigate way. Other ways the visual search gallery helps players strengthen and speed up their WoW game include:
· More than 3,000 images of quests, raids and items to get all the right information.
· Easy filtering of information by zone, type of quest, required level, type of item and more for easy navigation.
· Details about loot drops at the end of each arduous raid to increase stats and complete quests.

In addition, the Bing visual search gallery will feature helpful content and commentary from the WoW blogging community. When a blogger, such as yourself, writes about any items within the gallery, a link back to that blog post will be featured on that item’s visual search page.

Go to the Bing visual search gallery to look for exactly what’s needed within moments to get back and conquer the raid. For more details, check out this Bing blog post.

NO. BAD CORPORATION. NO COOKIE.

Wonderful example of entrepreneurial middle management within a large corporation.

“I’ve put together a proposal. It involves you giving me a large budget, 10 extra staff and looking the other day while we play WoW at work.”

    Approved.

OK. Since they canceled all their own games I guess they had to sucker on to WoW.

Maybe I’m missing something, but “search engine creates specialized search engine” seems reasonable enough to me.

I don’t really see what’s wrong here? There’s so many WoW info websites out there run by large companies, does anyone care that Microsoft will be running one of their own?

So, they never heard of the AtlasLoot addon? You don’t even have to open a window. It’s in-game.

  • http://Website SJS

    Who still uses AtlasLoot?

My first reaction, on hearing that WowHead was sharing data with Bing, was “LOL OMG WTF BBQ”, but then I clicked the link and and it was full of stars.

Not that I’ll have any use for it, of course. It doesn’t split out by spec or by PvE vs. PvP. Useless. :P

Not sure what the hullabaloo is here. Now if this sub-search site/engine/whatever thing is free for 3 or 4 years and then suddenly is sold to IGE or something I’m happy to bring teh internets rage for great justice.

Makes sense, somebody at Microsoft looked at the statistics and derived their operating system must primarily be a platform for playing World of Warcraft.

Armed with this knowledge, the development groups who routinely reduce Microsoft Office and Windows to bloatware by trying to enhance usability decide to justify their jobs by turning their efforts towards making World of Warcraft easier to use.

too bad the Bing search is completely useless. none of the listings show all of the stats of a given item. for instance, if an item had the following stats:

    +259 Int
    +94 Stam
    Increases spellpower by 9001

bing will tell you it has 259 Int and 94 Stam ONLY. the spellpower will be left out. anything that would appear in green on the item’s tooltip is missing from bing’s search results. gigantic waste of time.

WoW is the cancer of gaming, and it’s spreading. Put it down to end its suffering and make the world a better place.

I think it is not too bad (if it is a couple years earlier it will be great).

Initially I always use google, but I started use bing after I spend days search on google about a suitable method for IL, and the guy posted answer on MS forum told me he searched with bing within minutes…

So Bing has partnered with WoWhead to provide information that you could get in an undiluted form simply by going directly to WoWhead?

Yep, that sounds like Microsoft, always looking for a way to bloat a new product.

  • http://Website Iconic

Oh yea, and of course the Bing visual search is missing most of the item data, making it basically worthless.

Amazing … I wonder if anyone on the design team actually PLAYS WoW, or understands it on a player level (what a gamer would be looking for in comparison).

What they should just do is summed up in 3 easy steps:

    1. user visits site and picks class (User picks Warrior, as an example)

    2. website sees user has picked Warrior, and applys class specific filter (higher prioritization by stat type) and spits information out to page.

    3. user sees page shows raw search results for items based on numerical supremacy, but then notices the tabs at the top of the page that allow to customize results by a variety of catagories (IE PvP Arms, PvP Prot, PvP Fury, PvE Arms… etc)

and thus, a successful website is born.
